After a harrowing journey, Grant is accepted into a newly-formed infantry regiment. He is posted to the front lines of France, where he must learn to survive the horrors of war. A popular captain is brutally killed, and all the evidence points to murder. Who in the regiment did the deed? With the help of his comrades, Grant must survive the Battle of the Somme and the evil intentions of an unknown murderer, all while trying to earn the love of a beautiful aristocratic nurse.

I just stumbled across "Murder at Zero Hour" while perusing through Amazon's offerings and grabbed it up. After all, it's about World War One for crying out loud. Who writes about WWI anymore? Heck, we've had another world war and several other pretty big ones since then. Well, I for one am glad that Mr. Westwood looked that far back for inspiration and provided us with a glimpse at another place in time.

I found the writing to be coherent, the time references to be accurate (to the best of my knowledge, I'm not that old), and the action to be written in a believable and common sense fashion. I especially enjoyed the British colloquialisms, which I don't know how Mr. Westwood would know about without watching way too much BBC at night.

Now for the story: an young American man, recently out of college and working as an engineer, with an English born mother feels compelled to fight for her birth country to prevent its destruction by the German Army; and is also drawn out of his boring existence by the call of the adventure and action that comes along with war. After arriving in England, the young man eventually makes it into officer school for the British Army's stepchild unit (no one else would stoop so low as to take an American, after all). Once that short training period has elapsed, the young American is thrust into the middle of WWI-bayonets, trenches, artillery barages and everything else that goes along with it. During the fighting the man's superior is murdered and he feels compelled to prove that it wasn't the enemy that killed him, and to find out who did kill him and why it happened. The obligatory romance also comes into play and enhances the story quite well.

To find out what happens, you'll have to read the book. I found the overall feel of the book to be fun, easy to read, and historically interesting. The murder mystery plot line also kept a firm hold on me as a reader. There's nothing like a good who done it, to create it in the trenches of WWI made for a great story. This is an easy read, meaning that you don't have to sell your soul to the book in order to understand and follow all of the information and characters. As I've said previously, it's written well, but it's also easy to follow. I like that.

Murder At Zero Hour edition by Paul Westwood Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

The war can tax the most hardened heart. A young idealistic man has the blinders removed consciously. His survival marks the coming of age of an era.
A fairly quick and interesting read. The story plods in a couple of places, but the historical setting of WW I is unusual and lent itself well to the story. A nice story for the first half of a rainy day.
Decent WW1 trenches background and a decent murder mystery plot. Not good enough that I'd read more by the author but certainly worth the cost of the read.
This book, set in WW1, tells a great story. A murder mystery in the midst of mayhem and bloodshed.
The plot was convoluted, which makes for suspense.
The two dings against the book (and why I can't give 5 stars) is that a few of the main characters didn't ring true.
And the solution happened to fast Yey there was no sense of justice for evil people who committed treason.
Book is more of mystery than about WW1. Superficial concerning effect of WW I. Easy read but not challenging and had difficulty maintaining my interest.
What starts out as an interesting story - even if a bit slow-paced - ends up terribly disappointing. A wholly impossible story emerges. And then there's the use of the word "anyways" instead of "anyway". Each time I encountered the word (and it was far too often) it was like fingernails on a blackboard. Either the author or the editor should have been aware of it. Of course as a free book I can't complain of having wasted money.
Could not decide if it is a 4 or 5 star read, but definitely worth reading. A military crime mystery that takes you into the trench warfare of world war one as a young officer tries to solve the cause of the murder of his commanding officer and what was behind it. Book also addresses some of the conditions and misery of WW1 and class differences.
